Ingredients
8 oz organic tempeh
2 garlic cloves (minced)
3 tbsp organic tamari (reduced-sodium, or coconut aminos)
2 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
2 tbsp pure maple syrup
2 tsp onion powder
¼ tsp ground black pepper (optional)
2 tbsp vegetable broth (unsalted, preferably homemade)
Directions
1Prepare the tempeh for the marinade: In a steamer or steamer basket, heat the tempeh for 15–20 mins, then let cool.
2Once cool, slice the tempeh into ¼-inch strips, place in a shallow baking dish and set aside.
3Prepare the marinade: In a small bowl add the garlic, tamari, liquid smoke (if using), maple syrup, onion powder, ground black pepper (if using).
4Whisk well and pour the marinade over the tempeh strips.
5Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight, flipping halfway through.
6Cook the tempeh bacon: Heat a stovetop pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the vegetable broth, followed by the tempeh.
7Let the tempeh cook on one side for 2–3 minutes, then flip and cook on the other side until golden brown and heated through.
Chef's Notes
Substitutions
Instead of liquid smoke, add smoked paprika.
Use ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder in place of two garlic cloves.
How to enjoy
Add it to a charcuterie board!
Enjoy by itself as a snack!
