A few years ago, a woman in her early 60s sat across from me, eyes brimming with worry. Her mother had Alzheimer’s. Her older sister was beginning to forget names.
“I feel like I’m just waiting for the same thing to happen to me,” she said quietly.
What struck me most was not her fear, but her sense of helplessness. And she’s not alone.
We live in a time when brain-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS loom large in our collective consciousness. Perhaps most troubling is the trajectory. While deaths from heart disease, stroke, and HIV declined between 2000 and 2022, deaths from Alzheimer’s increased by more than 142% over the same period. Brain degeneration is not receding. It is accelerating.
A More Empowering Truth

It’s understandable if all of this feels overwhelming. But this is not a gloom-and-doom article. There’s a more empowering truth that puts much of the power back in your hands: Your lifestyle choices profoundly influence your brain’s destiny. You are not a passive observer of your future brain. You are its architect.
Neurodegenerative diseases don’t just “happen” one day when neurons start failing. They develop, under the radar, over decades, driven by chronic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and immune signaling — factors that are deeply influenced by how you eat, move, sleep, think, and connect.

The Mediterranean Lentil Bowl brings together tender green lentils, peppery arugula, and juicy cherry tomatoes for a dish that’s as satisfying as it is nourishing. A scattering of walnuts adds richness and plant-based fats, while a bright lemon-garlic dressing ties it all together. Ready in about 30 minutes, it’s a wonderful lunch or light dinner full of the kind of whole, simple ingredients your brain loves.
Ingredients
- 1 cup green lentils
- 2 cups low-sodium vegetable broth
- 2 cups baby arugula
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- ¼ cup raw walnuts, roughly chopped
- ¼ cup fresh flat-leaf parsley
- 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil*
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- Sea salt and cracked black pepper to taste
- Optional: kalamata olives, za’atar
*For oil-free, omit the oil or use 1 tablespoon tahini mixed with 2–4 tablespoons of water.
Directions
Cook lentils in vegetable broth until just tender, about 20 minutes — you want them firm, not mushy. While still warm, toss with arugula, cherry tomatoes, walnuts, and parsley. Whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper, and drizzle generously over the bowl. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Broccoli Sprout Pesto Makes ~1 cup | ~10 minutes

For something with a little more punch, the Broccoli Sprout Pesto puts one of the most powerful brain-supportive ingredients front and center. Broccoli sprouts blend beautifully with fresh basil, walnuts, and good olive oil to create a vibrant, versatile sauce. - ½ cup mixed berries, fresh or thawed
- A small handful of crushed walnuts
- Optional: drizzle of the sweetener of your choice, pinch of cinnamon
Directions
Combine yogurt, chia seeds, and ground flaxseed in a bowl. Stir and let sit a few minutes to thicken — or prep the night before for a denser, pudding-like texture. Top with berries, crushed walnuts, and any optional add-ins. The chia and flax deliver omega-3s and fiber in every bite.
Genes Load the Gun, but Lifestyle Pulls the Trigger
Even genetic risk factors like the APOE4 allele — a common variant that can impair how your body transports lipids and is closely linked to the development of dementia — are not destiny. Carrying the E4 variant is a predisposition, not a diagnosis. Your genes are simply the starting point; your daily lifestyle choices are the primary drivers of how they are expressed. This is the power of epigenetics.
Here are a few small, consistent practices that can reshape your brain over time:
- Regular movement, especially walking outdoors, boosts blood flow, supports neuroplasticity, and reduces inflammatory signaling.
- Sleep is not downtime; it is the brain’s most powerful repair window, when waste products are cleared and memory circuits are reinforced.
